It's hard to deny that bubbles almost always make a drink feel special. I mean, how many times would you turn to champagne, cava or whatever your preference is to celebrate or toast?
And sparkling cocktails can also feel that bit special, too, even if they are relatively simple. For example, one of my favorite summery cocktails, cava sangria, or a bright and delicious strawberry bellini for brunch. Then there are twists on a Kir, like a Kir Imperial with raspberry liqueur.
There's no denying: bubbles add something.
What is in a French 75 cocktail?
A French 75, or "Soixante Quinze" as it is known in France, is possibly the original champagne cocktail. It's made with lemon juice, simple syrup or sugar, gin or cognac and topped up with champagne.
What are the origins of a French 75?
The French 75 originates from the World War I era. The "75" is said to be named after a piece of WWI artillery. Who or where exactly it was created is a little unclear, but an early version is said to have been made at the New York bar in Paris, that became the well-known Harry's New York bar.
Whoever exactly gets the credit for first creating the drink, it's a delicious combination. Not too sweet nor too tart and with plenty of bubbly elegance.
This blueberry French 75 variation makes the classic even more beautiful, in my mind.
I have made a simple substitution of blueberry syrup instead of basic simple syrup, but it adds such amazing color and a very subtle flavor. You can make the blueberry syrup ahead of time and keep the extra to make further cocktails, whether this or others, as well as my blueberry lemonade.
How to make a blueberry French 75
- Put the blueberry syrup, lemon juice and gin in a cocktail shaker with some ice.
- Cover and shake to cool the mixture (or you can stir) then pour into a champagne flute.
- Top up the glass with champagne.
- Garnish with a thin strip of lemon zest and blueberries on a cocktail stick, if you like.
This fruity twist on the classic is easy to make, elegant and so tasty too. Soon a blueberry French 75 will become your signature party drink, or anytime sipper.
